This is a fictional murder mystery set in 1897 at the site of the infamous Hatfield and McCoy feud. The protagonist is Richard James, Deputy Sheriff of Mingo County stationed at Matewan, West Virginia on the Tug River. Richard is a transplanted Canadian who finds himself having to juggle cultural differences, grief over the recent loss of his wife and son, and a murder investigation, after a McCoy is found dead from a questionable snake bite. The death threatens to reignite the Hatfield/McCoy feud as Richard struggles to solve it.
Historical characters involved in the plot are "Devil" Anse Hatfield, the leader of the Hatfield clan and Mary Harris Jones, union organizer for the United Mine Workers.
Through it all runs the Tug, hence the title. Most of the action takes place on, in or around the little river winding its way through the mountains as the border between West Virginia and Kentucky.

Despite that historical fiction/ murder mystery isn't one of my favorite genre's I loved this book. Like most books, it took some time to get into but after the third chapter I couldn't put it down. It is so easy to become a fan of Richard because although he is the protagonist, he is also the underdog. Through his curiosity and way of looking at the world, you know he doesn't really fit in where he is but he makes do. In my opinion, the author's excellent creation of a deep, personal backstory really invests the reader in Richard's happiness. The author really does an incredible job of making you feel as though you are standing in the story instead of just reading the story in your stuffy apartment on a rainy day. He does this by incorporating such realistic details of what the world around Richard looks like. Overall, the main character isn't a superhero or a miracle worker but just a really really good person who commands respect and praise. It makes being someone that people look up to a realistic goal instead of something unattainable. I loved this book.Product details

R James Knox is an entertaining story teller. It was one of the most entertaining history lessons I've ever had.
