What do you get when you mix a hardboiled lady detective, a stripper with a cashbox for a heart and a simple magic charm?

In the city of Arcana you get trouble of the world-shattering, life-eating kind with only one lonely sorceress standing between humanity and oblivion.

Geoffrey Thorne, author of Star Trek Titan SWORD OF DAMOCLES, presents an original tale of dark magic, tragic love and timeless bonds. For mature readers.

I don't know if real lesbians would enjoy reading this, but straight men who find the abstract idea of lesbianism erotic probably will. It's not X rated, but it's very evocative. Even when sexual imagery is not involved this novel is very sensual in a simpler sense, we often learn how things smell and taste. The protagonist is very sensitive to magic, and for her it can have a smell and taste too.

Just when I was convinced that the plot was straightforward, and the story only notable for the sensual (in both senses) imagery, that's when it because a wild ride. This is not a simple story. As short as it is, the twists and turns came fast near the end. I almost gave it five stars, but you'll have to decide for yourself if everything fits together perfectly or just well enough when the story ends. For now just keep in mind, if some character actions don't make sense early on, you should keep reading.

The city in which the protagonist takes place has a long history, yet we never feel that what's being withheld from us detracts from our experience of the story. As for the history of the protagonist herself, you'll have to decide if there were enough hints that the ending is 'fair.' Fair or not though, it is resonant.

The Cost of Opening The Grim Arcana Book 2 eBook Geoffrey Thorne Reviews

Good, suspenseful story. Sat down and read it in about an hour. Would probably be better if it were stretched out into a full novel, but I enjoyed it, for what it was.
Every sidekick has a story. The Grim Arcana tales focus on the not-so-perfect bodies who orbit in the sphere of influence of Grim (The Pilgrim?). These are the B-listers who take center stage when the star has stepped off. They do the best they can with what they have. Like peanuts, you can't stop with just one.
This is more of a short story than a novella, but it is still enjoyable if you like this genre. I think I would classify this story as a hardboiled fantasy with a touch of horror. It's not gruesome or gory but it is a dark tale. I thought it was well written and I liked the characters, but I wish there was more. I would like to more about the city in which this story takes place. I'd like to know more about the character Grim, who pops up in Thorne's other novella, The Price of Salt. I want to know more about when this takes and what has happened in this city. I hope there will be a full length book or collection of short stories to explain it all.

I loved how the title came into play near the end of the book and I loved finding out about the character Flora. It was an interesting twist. I think I'd give this 2 1/2 stars but I liked how the title figured into the story and I liked the little twist at the end so it gets three. I will definitely purchase the next Grim installment.
